Facts About Rocks

🪨 Rocks Are Everywhere

Rocks are all around us! They make up mountains, beaches, riverbeds, deserts, and even the ground beneath your feet. Many roads, buildings, and sidewalks are made from rock, too.

🌋 There Are Three Main Types of Rocks

Scientists group rocks into three main types:
  • Igneous rocks form when melted rock cools.
  • Sedimentary rocks form from layers of sand, mud, and tiny pieces of rock.
  • Metamorphic rocks are rocks that change because of heat and pressure deep inside the Earth.

🚀 Rocks Have Been to Space

Astronauts brought rocks back from the Moon during the Apollo missions. Scientists study these Moon rocks to learn how our Moon—and even our Earth—formed.

🏔️ The Biggest Rocks Are Mountains

Mountains are giant masses of rock that were pushed up by moving pieces of Earth's crust called tectonic plates.

🧂 Everyday Things Come From Rocks

Many things you use every day come from rocks and minerals, including salt, pencils (graphite), glass, bricks, concrete, and even the metals inside phones and computers.

đź’Ž Gems Are Special Rocks and Minerals

Beautiful gemstones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are made from minerals found deep inside the Earth. They become valuable because they are rare and beautiful.

⏳ Some Rocks Are Billions of Years Old

Many rocks are much older than dinosaurs. Some of the oldest rocks on Earth could be more than 4 billion years old.

đź’Ž Not All Rocks Look the Same

Rocks come in many colors, shapes, and sizes. Some are smooth, some are rough, and some even sparkle because they contain tiny crystals.

🌊 Water Can Shape Rocks

Flowing rivers, ocean waves, wind, and ice slowly wear rocks down over time. This process is called erosion, and it can turn large boulders into small pebbles.

🦕 Some Rocks Hold Fossils

Certain rocks contain fossils, which are the remains or footprints of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Fossils help scientists learn about Earth's past.

🌎 Rocks Are Always Changing

The Earth is always changing, and so are rocks. Over millions of years, one type of rock can slowly change into another. This is called the rock cycle.

🤔 Fun Fact!

The word "geology" means the study of the Earth. People who study rocks are called geologists. They help us discover Earth's history and find important natural resources.

Under the surface
'What does the worker gain from his efforts? I have seen the task God has given humanity to keep us occupied. He has made everything suited to its time; also, he has given human beings an awareness of eternity; but in such a way that they can’t fully comprehend, from beginning to end, the things God does. I know that there is nothing better for them to do than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live. Still, the fact that everyone can eat and drink and enjoy the good that results from all his work, is a gift of God.' (Ecc) 3:9-13 https://www.bible.com/bible/1275/ECC.3.9-13.CJB
