DIY 101: How to Lay a Gravel or Stone Path
Spring is almost here and a gravel pathway is one of the easiest ways to refresh your outdoor space. Whether you're connecting a patio to your garden or creating a welcoming walkway, this simple DIY project delivers big results and is perfect for small-volume material purchases.
Step 1: Plan Your Path
Outline your walkway using a hose or rope, then measure the length and width to determine how much material you'll need. Most paths work best at 3-4 feet wide and in areas with good drainage.

Step 2: Gather Materials
You'll need:
- Landscape Fabric
- Crushed stone (base)
- Decorative gravel or stone
- Landscape Edging or Belgian Block
- Basic tools like a shovel, rake, and tamper.
Step 3: Excavate
Dig out the path area about 4-6 inches deep, removing grass and debris. Keep the surface level with a slight slope for drainage.

Step 4: Install Edging & Fabric
Add edging or use Belgian Block to keep the stone and gravel contained, then lay landscape fabric to help prevent weeds and keep layers separated.

Step 5: Build the Base
Add 2-3 inches of crushed stone and compact it firmly. A solid base keeps your path stable over time.

Step 6: Add Decorative Stone or Gravel
Top with 2-3 inches of your chosen stone or gravel and rake it smooth for a clean, finished look.

Gravel paths are affordable, beginner-friendly, and can be completed in a weekend. They're also ideal for smaller quantities of material while adding instant curb appeal and function to your yard.
