If you're tackling the job yourself, these six steps are non-negotiable for a wall that stands the test of time:

1. ✅ Layout & Utility Checks: Mark your wall’s path and call 811 before digging to ensure you avoid underground utility lines.
2. ✅ Dig the Trench: Dig a trench deep enough to bury the entire first row (the base course) of your block, plus a few extra inches for a gravel base.
3. ✅ Compact the Base: Pack 4 to 6 inches of dense-graded aggregate into the trench using a compactor. Never build directly on dirt.
4. ✅ Lay the Base Course: Place your first row of blocks down and check that every single block is perfectly level front-to-back and side-to-side. This is the most critical step!
5. ✅ Drainage and Backfill: To prevent water pressure from building up, place a perforated drain pipe behind the wall and backfill the space directly behind the blocks with clean Crushed Stone Products.
6. ✅ Cap It Off: Finish your wall with matching capstones, locking them firmly into place with a heavy-duty, exterior-grade concrete adhesive.
